Daily Devotional for October 5, 2015
Psalm 64-65
Scripture:
65:1 Praise awaits you, O God, in Zion; to you our vows will be fulfilled.
65:2 O you who hear prayer, to you all men will come.
65:3 When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgressions.
65:4 Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple.
65:5 You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness, O God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas,
65:6 who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength,
65:7 who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations
Observation:
God is good, he hears our prayers and cares about our lives. In addition, when we are overwhelmed by sin, He is faithful to forgive us. Over and over again the Bible tells us of God’s blessings and how much he cares about His people. I love the line in verse 5, “You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness.” Who doesn’t want more awesome deeds of righteousness from the Lord who created the heavens and the earth? The other day my son Levi was helping me understand how strong God is. He said, “Did you know that Jesus can break a diamond with His pinky toe?” Listen, I am not sure that is theologically sound, however, that is how an eight year old perceives the power of God. That same God is the one who hears our prayers and answers us with awesome deeds of righteousness. Whether His pinky toe can break a diamond or not, God is all powerful and he cares about us. That, in my opinion, is awesome!
Application:
- Personal Application: Take a few minutes with the Lord to inventory your heart and life. Ask for forgiveness and for God to bring you close to His courts. Spend a few more minutes giving praise to the Lord for all the good things He has done.
- Family Devotional: Read this Psalm to your family. Remind them of the goodness of the Lord. Tell a story of a time where God answered your prayers with an awesome deed of righteousness. Pray with them that they will always stay close to the Lord.
Prayer:
- Personal Prayer Focus: Ask God to forgive you of any sin that may be in your life and to set your feet on His path of righteousness.
- Family Prayer Focus: Pray that your family will always strive to live holy lives that are honoring to God.
